the earth is red because of the iron in the soil. Makes it perfect growing soil for potatoes, turnips, beans. If the summer warmth lasted longer than approximately 2 months, they would be able to grow the same fruit & vegetables as California.

Must be interesting to see.
actually yes, very interesting, but the weather was not conducive to walking as it was pouring..
That would definitely NOT be conducive to walking! :-(
Too bad, sorry! :-(
I don't like the sound of only 2 months warmth. But the red soil is very attractive.
I think the red soil is very attractive - if I remember correctly I think in the south of England the soil is very red too, Kate will be able to answer that one. I'm trying to recall what makes it red - is it iron or something, we do have the red potatoes here in NZ - will get back to you with the name, I have had a glass of organic red wine and you will have to excuse my memory and probably randomly strange comments :-)
Yes down in Paignton in Devon and that area there is plenty of red soil. We had white chalky soil in the Cotswolds where we were last week. Must get around to posting some pics of that.
