I made this in layers in artrage (from scratch, not photos), and moved it to photoshop to delete the white background in the layer of rectangles. I also adjusted the layer blending.
I am only telling you this in case you want to try it with photos.

It's interesting to see you experimenting Mary but somehow I don't think I will be having a go.
OK!
It's a very interesting program, but works differently than photoshop so you have to learn new skills.
I like photoshop much better--MUCH better, but it is also much more expensive. This might be fun for someone who couldn't afford photoshop and is useful when combined with photoshop--because it has bushes unavailable in photoshop. I think it's probably better for artists th an photographers, and that's really what it's designed for.
If I make any startling new discoveries that apply to PHOTOGRAPHERS, I will let you all know.
I'm sure you HAVE seen them but just thought I'd mention the ton of different brushes hidden behind the normal ones in PS.
These are the brushes I've been playing with in artrage: oil painting, markers, pencils, brayers (rollers), palette knife, glitter. Also, tube of paint.
The oil paint is SORT of like the smudge brush in PS, but I have not been able to adjust the PS one so that it really looks like oil paint.
The pencil is not much different. Markers, too. (similar to PS). I can't remember a brayer or palette knife in PS.
I really like PS better. But for someone who couldn't afford PS or wanted some effects not readily available in PS, artrage is nice.
Actually sounds great fun for a kid to play with. Would it be simple enough?
The free version is pretty simple--TRY IT!
When you open it, there is essentially a blank screen and on the lower left, a palette and you can click on a paintbrush and click on a color and go.
Or you can load a photo and paint over it. (That would take an older kid or adult help) But no help needed to just paint. And then you can save or print. Well--actually, I dunno if you can print with the free version, but if you save it, you can definitely print it (using the computer or another program). I haven't tried printing anything yet directly from artrage.
If you make a mistake, you can erase or undo--endlessly.
I think it would be really fun for a kid. There are lots of effects and glitter and stuff, but I hardly ever use the free version, so I am not sure how many of the effects come with it--not all! BUT I DO KNOW you can paint, or paint a photo, because I did both of those.
I just went to the free version and here are the tools that are available: CRAYON, pencils, marker, chalk, paintbrush, palette knife and eraser. The tools can be resized and there is a color palette and a color picker. You cannot use stencils, I just tried, but you can add tracing images and pick colors from them. I think a kid would really enjoy it. :-D
I must keep this in mind for when I have time. Come to think of it Holly and Thomas are coming over on Sunday so Holly would love this.
If you do try it, let me know how it works out.
I haven't tried it with kids. But I THINK it would work!
This is still my favourite of all your artrages. Does look fun but not on my list of priority must haves. I must have missed the top two coming in somehow. Not keen on the fish or the 'remember when' which is a bit fussy although I realise you were only experimenting and showing what could be done.
Yeah, just trying to learn the possibilities!
I've been away, first to the Dodge poetry festival, then to Syracuse, NY and then home and out again to Harbor Springs MI for a writing retreat. So I am way way behind on my Photiquing.
It's only $25 for the download, so it might be something to recommend people try who can't afford photoshop.
